December Income and Spending

Not that it really needs to be mentioned again, but the only thing we really earned this December was a snowman made of humility and an igloo filled with lessons on what not to do.  Are we bummed? Not at all, good lessons have been learned and we’re going to use them to not screw up as bad in January.

What We Spent:

$12 Domain registration for this site
$30 Convergence WordPress Theme from ThemeForest.com
$10 Get The Funk Out Stock Audio from AudioJungle.com
$150 2 Blue Snowball Microphones
————————————————————————–
$202 Total

What We Earned:

$15.60 Affiliate earnings from Envato
————————————————————————–
$15.60 Total

What Does This Mean?!?

Well in a nut shell, it looks like we paid a $186.40 for a month long lesson in taking control of our projects.  Now if we wanted to get technical, none of that money was actually spent on the WordPress project itself but on the P:PI website.  Since we can’t have any of the projects without this website, and we didn’t spend any money on the December project, we just decided to lump it all in together.  Fair? Thought so!

In this episode:

  • Being too passive with passive income
  • Owning your projects
  • Choosing to work with the right people
  • Affiliate West?
  • Holiday binge drinking

So for those of you that haven’t heard the story before, Taylor and I woke up on a snowy Canadian December morning, rubbed our eyes, folded up our onesies and decided we were going to take a custom WordPress theme to market.  Not to spoil the ending for everyone, but we made some serious mistakes and ended up with a whole lot of nothing.  Don’t worry though, this story still has a happy ending! We’re going to take the huge steaming pile of lessons we learned in December and make sure that we don’t make the same mistakes with our super awesome exciting January project!

December Project Revealed!

Not that it’s any big surprise, but we’re going to start this whole experiment with a nice easy online venture – selling a wordpress theme.  Friend of P:PI Greg Rollett from Rock Star Lifestyle Design has had some success a theme targeting towards bands, and we’ll be re-arrangeing that theme and targeting it towards some new markets.  Will this idea send our bank accounts into six figures? Probably not. However, it’s going to give us a month of throwing stuff on the wall and seeing what sticks.

Detail Report – Getting P:PI Launched, Website Edition!

Here’s my very first detail report! It’s a summary of everything we did to get the website launched.

Once the idea, and the name were sorted out we moved right into setting up our site.  Domain registration and hosting came from GoDaddy.com and was easy to set up in minutes. There was no question about how we would handle the content, so headed right over to WordPress.org and downloaded the latest version.  Using the WordPress documentation and step-by-step guides make it a breeze, and it seems like more and more hosting packages are including it pre-installed.

Using Your iPhone 4 in Japan (Off Topic)

Hey all, I just got back from Tokyo Japan, and had a blast. One silly thing about Japan is that cell phones are tied to citizens, and you can’t just show up at the airport and grab a pay-as-you-go SIM or micro SIM card from a vending machine.

Alright – so the company I used delivered my Sim card to Narita Airport, and that’s where I dropped it off as well. Was a little expensive, but way better than paying the North American roaming fees.

Here’s the link: http://jcrcorp.com/mobile/mobile_rental_simcard.htm

If there’s a better way, please drop it in the comments. This is the best way I could find. Wifi is pretty rare there because everyone has a pretty solid smartphone that they email from. You can find wifi at McDonalds and Starbucks, but it’s a bit of a pain.

ALSO if you’re getting a “data network cannot be activated” error it’s because you have to pop the link they give you in the user manual (http:// something) into the Settings>General>Network>Cellular Data Network

Enjoy Japan!

RANDOM NOTE:
Micro Sim Cards, and regular Sim Cards are the exact same thing. You just need to x-acto knife the extra plastic off to make it fit in your micro tray. #WorstProductEngineering.
